Hemorrhoid Treatment

Seeking treatment for hemorrhoids can be an uncomfortable and often embarrassing journey for many individuals. The pain, itching, and discomfort associated with internal hemorrhoids can significantly affect one’s quality of life.

Fortunately, advancements in medical treatment have provided several options for relief, with one standout method being Hemorrhoid Artery Embolization (HAE).USA Hemorrhoid Centers specializes in this innovative approach, offering patients a minimally invasive solution that sets it apart from traditional treatments. While many individuals may initially consider options such as over-the-counter creams, rubber band ligation, or surgical removal, these methods can come with limitations, including pain, a lengthy recovery period, and a higher risk of complications.

Do All Hemorrhoids Require Treatment?

Not all hemorrhoids require treatment, as many cases are mild and can resolve on their own. Hemorrhoids, which are swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum, often cause discomfort but may not necessitate medical intervention.

When Treatment is Necessary

  1. Severity of Symptoms: Many individuals experience mild symptoms that can be managed with lifestyle changes, such as increasing fiber intake, staying hydrated, and avoiding straining during bowel movements. In these cases, simple home remedies and over-the-counter treatments may suffice
  2. Persistent Symptoms: If symptoms persist despite conservative measures, or if they worsen, it may be time to seek medical advice. This is particularly true for cases where internal hemorrhoids have prolapsed or if there is significant pain or bleeding.
  3. Impact on Daily Life: If hemorrhoids interfere with daily activities or sleep, or if they do not improve after a week of at-home treatments, consulting a healthcare provider is advisable
  4. Severe Cases: In more severe instances, such as thrombosed external hemorrhoids or prolapsed internal hemorrhoids that do not return to their original position, medical treatment may be necessary. Surgical options are typically considered only when other treatments have failed.

Types of Hemorrhoids

External hemorrhoids are visible lumps outside of the anus. These hemorrhoids can be very painful, but they tend to go away on their own without treatment.

Internal hemorrhoids, which are located inside the rectum, can cause bleeding, itching, and discomfort. They can also extend outside of the anus (prolapsed hemorrhoid). Internal hemorrhoids that don’t resolve on their own after a few days may require medical treatment.

Hemorrhoid Artery Embolization (HAE)

Hemorrhoid artery embolization (HAE) is an advanced, non-surgical procedure for internal hemorrhoids that we offer at our hemorrhoid clinics nationwide.

HAE is performed by an interventional radiologist, a doctor specializing in minimally invasive procedures using imaging guidance.

During HAE, a small catheter is inserted into an artery in the groin or wrist. The catheter is then guided to the arteries that supply blood to the hemorrhoids. Small particles or coils are then injected into the arteries to block the blood flow to the hemorrhoids. This causes the hemorrhoids to shrink and the symptoms to improve.

HAE is a safe and effective treatment for internal hemorrhoids. The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis and does not require general anesthesia. Patients may experience some mild discomfort after the procedure, but this usually goes away within a few days.

Hemorrhoid Artery Embolization vs. Other Hemorrhoid Removal Options

There are other treatments for hemorrhoids, including surgical hemorrhoid removal and other less-invasive procedures.

  • Sclerotherapy: This procedure involves injecting a solution into the hemorrhoid to shrink it. The solution causes the blood vessels that supply the hemorrhoid to clot, which causes the hemorrhoid to shrink.
  • Rubber band ligation: This hemorrhoid treatment uses rubber bands to tie off the hemorrhoid, causing it to shrink and fall off.
  • Hemorrhoidectomy: This is a surgical procedure to remove the hemorrhoid. Hemorrhoidectomy is usually only recommended for people with severe hemorrhoids who have not responded to other treatments.
  • Infrared coagulation: This non-surgical hemorrhoid treatment uses heat energy from infrared light to shrink inflamed hemorrhoidal tissue.
  • Prescription medications: When over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams don’t work, a doctor might prescribe a prescription hydrocortisone cream to reduce the swelling and irritation.

Hemorrhoid artery embolization and other less-invasive procedures do not change the underlying structure of the existing hemorrhoid tissue, so there’s less risk of bleeding or infection than there is with hemorrhoid removal surgery. With hemorrhoid surgery, there is also a higher frequency of recurrence and complications.1

The procedure we offer, HAE, doesn’t create rectal wounds, and anal continence is preserved.

When to Seek Treatment for Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are extremely common — in the United States, self-reported cases exceed 10 million a year.3 Many cases resolve on their own without medical care.

However, if hemorrhoids that persist are left untreated, the severity and the symptoms tend to worsen over time.1 There’s also a risk of serious blood loss, infection, and anal fissures, which are painful tears in the lining of the anus.

Additionally, it’s possible to mistake symptoms of another condition, such as colon cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, for hemorrhoid symptoms, so it’s important not to ignore ongoing signs of a health concern.

Getting a proper diagnosis is a good idea if you notice bleeding before, during, or after bowel movements. Hemorrhoids that don’t resolve within one week or that cause worsening symptoms also indicate it’s time to see a hemorrhoid specialist.

USA Hemorrhoid Centers is staffed by leading hemorrhoid doctors. They can evaluate your symptoms and develop a personalized treatment plan to help you feel better.

How to treat internal hemorrhoids?

Treatments for internal hemorrhoids include hemorrhoid artery embolization (HAE), infrared coagulation, and hemorrhoid removal surgery. You can also relieve internal hemorrhoid symptoms at home with warm baths, good hydration, and a high-fiber diet.

How are hemorrhoids diagnosed?

Hemorrhoids are diagnosed with a physical exam. Doctors can identify external hemorrhoids with a visual exam or a digital rectal exam. They may also use anoscopy or proctoscopy, which involves using a thin hollow tube with a light.

Will a hemorrhoid go away without treatment?

A hemorrhoid might disappear without medical treatment. Good lifestyle habits, such as regular exercise, drinking plenty of water, and eating a high-fiber diet, can help a hemorrhoid disappear on its own.
